See the Outlyers on stage... right now!
For the second year the Outlyers were "Happy" to participate in the Artvoice "Exile on Allen Street" evening of Rolling Stones songs covered by local bands. The show was at Nietzsche's on June 27, 2009. Their contributions were "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadows" and "Loving Cup." You can watch a psychedelic video of the former below (courtesy of the Artvoice web site). Not too bad for a song the band learned 3 days before.

Previously (October 18, 2008) the band performed at Nietzsche's at a Paul McCartney Tribute night hosted by the Scott Celani Band. Artvoice had their video cameras there as well and you can see their version of McCartney's "Ninteen Hundred and Eighty Five" by clicking here.

Outlyers' Cover Song List
If you've seen the Outlyers play live you will have noticed that they mix their self-penned songs with covers - some familiar classics, some less well known. While the band has performed well over 100 different songs since starting out in 1998 there are nearly 50 tunes on the current list. Click here to read it!

Cathy's Album is now available
Thanks to everyone who made the May 8 release party for Cathy Carfagna's solo album, Turn Your Face to the Sun, a rocking success. The band managed to cover 12 of the 13 songs live with the assistance of Jim Whitford and a surprise harmony vocal from Cathy's Jazzabel partner Kilissa Cissoko.

If you don't have a copy yet, they will be available at all Outlyers shows. It's also in the racks at Buffalo area Record Theatres. Online sales (both CDs and digital downloads) are through CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon and others. Or send us an e-mail and we'll give you direct ordering info.

If you buy from one of the online sources your comments in the customer review section of the web sites is invited and appreciated.

Here is a web page with more info on Cathy's CD.

For Adam Gearing fans: keep your eyes on this page - we'll let you know when he's planning on being here. Of course the e-mails we send out before shows will also fill you in. Not getting the e-mails? Get on the list by contacting us at outlyers@buffalo.com.

Hits & Myths

By now many of you have had your copies of the Hits & Myths CD for a while. You may have wondered about the cover image that LOOKS LIKE Stonehenge. It's actually Stonehenge II in Hunt, Texas and the picture above is the one that was used to create the cover art. The people in the picture are Tom Fenton and Kilissa McGoldrick Cissoko. They were in Texas (with Cathy Carfagna, Dave Meinzer aka Nimrod Wildfire, and Tom Stahl) to play at the Kerrville Folk Festival in May 1997. They visited this curious site after breakfast one morning. If you want to know more about it check out his web site:
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/TXHUNhenge.html

For the Outlyers' second album Cathy Carfagna contributed more as a full-time member, singing lead on three songs and playing keyboards (and her groovy resonator guitar) all over the album. A little Tex-Mex flavoring can be heard on some tracks, there's a bonafide piano ballad, and a few songs rock with a bit more edge than the last album. Drumming chores have been taken over by Bob Chapman who plays on a handful of songs. Jim Whitford once again adds pedal steel and lap steel to selected songs. Other contributors include Them Jazzbeards violinist Mike Miskuly and George Olmsted on congas, both on "Loteria." Adam and Tom's former Riddlers bandmate Kevin McCue added acoustic 12-string guitar to "Walk Around with You." Trumpet and saxophone on a pair of songs were played by Jim Bohm and Eric Wozniak. Other sonic touches range from digital orchestration to castanets and sleigh bells.

Check out buffaloroots.com for a story and pictures from the recording studio and a review of the album.

A newer "This Is It - Live+" CD is also now available at CDBaby, featuring live performances from reunited bands at the October 2002 Tralf show including Davy & the Crocketts.

Here's a picture of the Outlyers at the Molson Canal Concert Series in August 2004. Tommy and the Two-Tones followed us on stage and Kansas headlined the show.

Luau Time:
Outlyer Dave Meinzer released a solo album in 2003. John Brady III, Frank Quebral, and Charlie Quill from the Steam Donkeys played on the recordings from the previous summer along with Jim Whitford and Cathy Carfagna. Tina Peel added some background vocals. The 10 songs recorded include a Stephen Foster ballad, "Comrades Fill No Glass for Me," and a pair of rearranged traditional numbers: "Hellbound Train" and "Whitehouse Blues." The seven Meinzer originals are "Number On the Door," "The Buzzard," "Luau Time," "Dream of Me," "Old What's His Name," "Shallow Grave," and "The Other Shoe." Called Luau Time, the album is still available - contact Dave by e-mail at wildfire@buffalo.com for ordering info. Click HERE for more on Dave and Luau Time.

Dave also worked as a producer with the re-constructed New Wave era Buffalo band the Vores. Their album is available now at Buffalo area stores, at www.thevores.com, and on iTunes.
