News Changes Cafeteria Service,
Guild Requests Bargaining

The Buffalo News is moving to eliminate nightside cafeteria hours as part of its proposed food service changes. The News has signed on a new vendor to provide food service.

The Guild, in response, has informed the company of its rights to bargain over changes to the cafeterias, most notably a reduction in hours. Any change in cafeteria service is a mandatory subject of bargaining.

Several Guild members have voiced concern about the lack of options at night and a loss of service to employees who "need it the most."

While many of the cafeteria changes are viewed as improvements, they would leave nightside workers without any hot food service on the second or fifth floors

The News wants to replace nightside service with what it describes as "state of the art" vending machines.

The Guild has approached the other unions within The Buffalo News to engage in joint bargaining with the company on the issue.
