The Guild's Executive Board has authorized the filing of an Unfair Labor Practice charge against The Buffalo News because of changes to its cafeteria service.

The charge would be based on The News' unilateral imposition of cafeteria changes, most notably the elimination of evening hours. The reduction in hours affects dozens of Guild members who work at night.

The Guild also contends The News developed the cafeteria changes through a subcommittee of employees and therefore improperly circumvented the bargaining process with its unions, a violation of the National Labor Relations Act.

The News, in a recent meeting with Guild leaders, indicated it will look into reopening the cafeteria at night.

The Guild is working with other unions in hopes of engaging in joint bargaining over cafeteria service.
