Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow
THE NEWS'
NEW INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
Last year's Nov. 20 snowfall (two feet in about six hours, for those who don't remember) is one Buffalo won't forget anytime soon.
The Guild won't forget it soon because it gave the union a chance to address problems with The News' snow day policy.
Long-standing practice gave employees the option of taking either a vacation day, a float day or a no-pay day if they were unable to get into work.
But some managers in one guild unit had other ideas.
They actually changed time cards to charge employees with either a float day or a vacation day on Nov. 20, even if they just wanted to take the day off without pay.
Under a settlement forged by President Phil Fairbanks and Vice Presidents Sina Williams and Pat Gormley, the Guild was able to re-establish past practice of giving Guild members an option to take vacation, a floater or a no-pay day during a weather-related emergency.
