Showdown in Motown:
National Rally Will Attract Thousands
Detroit’s Metropolitan Council of Newspaper Unions is holding a two-day rally in support of striking newspaper workers, June 20-21.
Two thousand union employees of the Detroit Free Press and Daily News attempted to end their strike in February, but the publishers have locked the workers out, refusing to allow them to return to their jobs.
The rally will attract working people from across the United States who support workplace justice, and want to protest the employer’s illegal bargaining tactics and the use of scabs in the Detroit newspaper strike.
Activities planned for the weekend include a march and rally, inter-faith prayer service, labor education seminars, and live blues and jazz at a riverfront park.
Plans for potential participation by members of the Buffalo Newspaper Guild will be discussed at the June 5 local meeting.
