Guilt.

Sixteen years of Catholic education leaves you vulnerable to it when the faithful few who are doing their part for the Guild come around and ask you to get involved.

The fact that you attend a contract ratification meeting every few years isn't enough. They demand more.

"OK, I'll do it," I said.

And now that I know where the Guild office is and have attended my first few regular meetings in more than a decade, I'm finding out that taking a more active role in the Guild is as big a burden as I thought it would be.

But, I shudder to think of what working conditions would be like at the Buffalo News without the Guild.
