Guild and CWA Delegate
Elections Advance Separately

Local members attending the April Guild meeting nominated eight activists to fill five delegate positions to The Newspaper Guild’s June convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The need for a mail ballot election was eliminated, however, when two members, Dick Fay and Phil Fairbanks, declined their nominations.

The remaining delegate nominees are Sina Williams, Tom Dolan, Gerry Bernardi, Carol Ann Burke, Bill Jerge and Marian Needham. Following Fairbanks and Fay’s withdrawal from the race, Jerge volunteered to serve as an alternate, leaving five delegates elected by acclaim.

That takes care of delegates to The Newspaper Guild’s convention, but the local must still nominate and elect two delegates to the Communication Workers of America convention, schedule for June 30 - July 1 in Las Vegas, NV.

The Guild’s Constitution requires that delegates to the CWA convention must be delegates to the Guild’s convention. The local addressed that requirement by passing a resolution that the two nominees receiving the highest number of votes in the Guild convention election would become the CWA delegates, but the withdrawal of two nominees has eliminated the need for a mail ballot election. Therefore, nominations for CWA convention delegates will be taken at the May 1 local meeting. In the event of a contested election, a mail ballot election will be conducted immediately.
