Destro Runs for Secretary as Madore Steps Down

Nominations for 1997 local officers will be taken at the Nov. 7 meeting of the Buffalo Newspaper Guild.

Tina Destro, ABC vice chair has announced her intention of running for the office of secretary. Destro has served as ABC vice chair since February. She participated in departmental bargaining talks earlier this year and serves on the Guild's workplace strategies committee. Destro joined the accounting staff in 1993 and has a total of six years experience with The Buffalo News in both ABC and circulation.

James T. Madore, local secretary since 1991, is not seeking re-election. "I've enjoyed serving as secretary, but it's time for someone else to step in ... to bring new ideas and the fresh perspective that comes with a change in leadership," he said.

Madore, a business reporter for seven years at The News, plans to continue his involvement with the Guild. He has served as editor of the Frontier Reporter for several years, a post that is appointed by the president.

Sina Williams, president; Tom Dolan, vice president and Bob Snyder, treasurer have all said they will stand for re-election.

Williams and Dolan both stressed the importance of continuity in Guild leadership during the current negotiations and in the period following settlement.

"We would like to see the activism generated during this bargaining year to continue," Williams said. "The year following a settlement is extremely important.

"Familiarity with the terms and language set forth in this contract will be imperative in the enforcement and interpretation of the agreement - it's important to understand the process from which the terms and language came," Williams said, referring to the bargaining process.

Williams, a member of the Guild since 1981, also participated in the 1993 contract negotiations. She succeeded Mike Vogel as local president last year, after serving as unit chair. Prior to becoming unitchair, Williams served as vice president, secretary and classified vice chair.

Dolan, a reporter, will seek a third term as vice president. He also headed the grievance committee from 1990 through 1995, and served for one year as editorial vice chair.

"These negotiations will yield far-reaching changes in the future. ... It's vitally important that we develop good language, a clear understanding of the language, enforce it and watch its implementation," Dolan said.

Snyder, a customer service coordinator in inside circulation, will seek a fifth term as treasurer. He has been a Guild activist for 10 of his 15 years at The News.
