Merger Spurs Enlistment Drive
for New Members

The “bottom line” mentality, or to quote a favorite phrase of management - “Greed is Good” has been running rampant not only in the newspaper industry but virtually all industries. One result of the attitude has been the loss in union membership from downsizing and newspaper closings in recent years.

Now that TNG has merged with CWA, steps are being taken to turn around this decline in membership. A stronger commitment is being made to implement aggressive organizing programs on the international and local level. This means that on the local level the number of Guild members who organize will increase dramatically.

Beginning July 1, 1997, Local 26 will no longer send $1 per member per month to TNG-CWA to help build the special organizing fund. Instead. Local 26 will now be able to establish its own local organizing fund and program. The Buffalo Newspaper Guild will be able to set up a local organizing committee, train organizers, help identify new targets for organizing, and pursue aggressively the signing-up up new members.
