With TV cameras rolling, the Buffalo Newspaper Guild last month unveiled a new weapon in its fight for quality journalism at The Buffalo News.
A man dressed in old-fashioned Town Crier garb and carrying a bronze bell made his debut at a Guild news conference in front of The News.
The Crier, a local union actor hired by the Guild, is part of a new community campaign designed to educate the public about under staffing at Buffalo's only daily newspaper.
"Did you know?" the Crier asked the crowd outside The News. "The Buffalo News wants to increase circulation in the suburbs. But at the same time The News has decided to under staff its newsroom by 30 percent."
The Crier will continue making public appearances until The News decides to negotiate the issue of staffing in the newsroom.
