Nominations Slated for April Meeting
Nominations will be taken at the April 3 local meeting for delegates to attend the last convention of The Newspaper Guild.
The convention is scheduled for June 16-20 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. At the close of this historic meeting, The Newspaper Guild will officially become members of the Communications Workers of America.
Additionally, Guild locals are expected to send delegates to the CWA’s convention in Las Vegas June 30 - July 1. Local 26 is entitled to two delegates at that convention.
In future years, The Newspaper Guild sector of the CWA will be held immediately preceding and in the same location as the 2-day CWA convention.
Local president Sina Williams is recommending that the union send its full complement of six delegates to the Guild convention, if the membership is willing to adopt cost cutting measures.
She is recommending that delegates use vacation time for the convention. This unprecedented move will save the local about $4,500 in lost time. Williams also is recommending that delegates double-up on hotel rooms. With these measures in place, she estimates the cost to be about $1,200 per delegate.
If there is a contested election for Guild convention delegates, the two nominees receiving the highest number of votes will be elected as CWA convention delegates. If the Guild convention election is uncontested, members will nominate CWA convention delegates from among the six Guild convention delegates, as required by the CWA/Guild constitution.
