Dialogue Improves Working Conditions in Accounting

It has been a challenging and exciting year in the ABC department as we entered this round of bargaining talks at The Buffalo News. Departmental bargaining, a new venture for Guild representatives and management alike, proved to be an important tool in solving some problems that existed in the contract since the ABC department organized in 1983.

Through very hard work, research and perseverance by me, Gerry Bernardi, our president Sina Williams and chief negotiator Marian Needham, we were able to hammer out a tentative agreement that puts all Guild members working in the ABC department in the same pay group, providing an equal plane for all workers. We developed an agreement that is beneficial to all of the employees in the department now, and in the future.

I saw incredible support for the bargaining process by ABC employees, who were the first Guild employees at The News to participate in a job action supporting our departmental bargaining talks. They signed a petition protesting The News' so-called job descriptions, which the company created to use as a basis for future wage talks at the main bargaining table. The ABC Guild staff showed the managers that they intend to be appreciated and recognized for the hard work that they do every day. We have all participated in further job actions as well and I commend my fellow workers for their commitment to a better workplace.

Personally, I have found union involvement very rewarding and satisfying. It is a tremendous experience to participate in something that can make such a positive difference in people's lives. I want to thank all of the ABC Guild employees for their support and efforts to make a better working environment for themselves, and ultimately all Buffalo News employees.

The challenge, however, is not over. Your support is still needed as bargaining continues. Remember, this is our contract. Please show your representatives on the bargaining team your encouragement. Let them know your concerns. Keeping the lines of communication open is essential to the implementation of a good contract.

Each of us has the strength and power to make a difference. Never underestimate yourselves. Involvement in your union is as important as taking pride in your work. Thanks again.
