What Prevention Education is all about

HISPANIC/NATIVE AMERICAN
Instructor Supervisor:
Willie Lee McCullough - 892-3459

Good News!!! The Erie County Department of Youth Services has approved our 1997 in the amount of $3600. This money will be used to teach fifteen prevention education courses in the Hispanic and Native American communities as part of our "Learn and Grow with Camp Fire" program. Anyone who is interested in teaching call either Michelle or Willie.

Miriam Gonzalez is finishing up the last two classes for the 1996 grant at School 76. Thus far we have served 134 children in the lower west side of Buffalo, and expect to have served 182 children by the end of December.

SUBURBAN
Instructor Supervisors: Cheryl Andres - 837-2112
Sandra Goldsmith - 834-0599
Janice Heimiller - 837-0710

Our suburban program has served 124 children this fall. Unfortunately, we have only been serving the Kenmore area. We need to branch out across the county, but in order to do so we need more instructors. Even if you can not find the time to teach, please try to think of the people you know, would any of them make good instructors. If you think so approach them about becoming a Camp Fire instructor.

Our "I'm Taking Care" Babysitting course was a huge hit this fall. We offered two courses which quickly became three due to an overwhelming interest in the courses, and I still have a waiting list. So it seems to be just like in the movie A Field of Dreams "if you teach, they will come."

URBAN:
Instructor Supervisor: Willie Lee McCullough - 892-3459
Thanks to the generous support of the Children's Foundation, we have just completed 14 prevention education courses. We served 230 boys and girls from low income areas of the city. These courses were held at Highgate Heights, Academic Challenge Center, Friends of the Elderly and Early Childhood Center #90.

Good News!!! Camp Fire has been awarded $3000 to offer our Peacemakers courses to low income areas of the city. We received $1000 from the W.J. Family Foundation and $2000 from the General Mills Foundation. These courses will be started in January 1997. If anyone is interested in teaching, please call either Willie or Michelle.

Mid-Erie Counseling and Treatment Services has contracted Camp Fire Boys and Girls to teach 23 classes at School 31, School 40 and Lorraine Academy.
These classes are to be held during the school day. If anyone is available to teach during the school day, please call Michelle at the Camp Fire Office.
